How to Make Magical Oils
1. Choose your carrier oil (olive for earth magic, almond for love, coconut for healing, jojoba for all-purpose).
2. Add dried herbs to a clean jar — fill about 1/3 full.
3. Cover completely with carrier oil. No herbs should be above the oil line.
4. Seal and store in a warm, dark place for 2-4 weeks. Shake daily while stating your intention.
5. Strain through cheesecloth into dark glass bottles. Label with name and date.
6. For faster results: gentle heat method — warm oil and herbs in a double boiler on lowest heat for 2-4 hours. Never let it boil.
Shelf life: 6-12 months. Add vitamin E oil (a few drops) as a preservative. Store away from light and heat.
Tincture Making Guide
Tinctures are concentrated herbal extracts — powerful, long-lasting, and versatile. The backbone of any apothecary.
Folk Method
Fill a jar 1/3-1/2 with dried herb. Cover completely with 80-proof vodka. Seal. Store in dark place. Shake daily for 4-6 weeks. Strain through cheesecloth. Store in dark dropper bottles.
Easiest method. Works for most herbs. Use dried herbs to prevent mold.
Double Extraction
First extract in alcohol (4 weeks). Strain. Then simmer the same herbs in water for 4 hours. Strain water. Combine both liquids.
Best for resinous herbs and mushrooms. Extracts both alcohol-soluble and water-soluble compounds.
Vinegar Tincture
Same as folk method but use apple cider vinegar instead of alcohol. Shake daily for 2-4 weeks. Strain.
Alcohol-free option. Shorter shelf life (1 year vs 5+ years). Good for children and those avoiding alcohol.
Glycerite
Fill jar 1/3 with herb. Cover with 3 parts vegetable glycerin to 1 part water. Shake daily for 4-6 weeks. Strain.
Sweet-tasting, alcohol-free. Lower extraction power but gentler. Good for kids and palatability.
Tincture Safety Rules
1. NEVER tincture a plant you cannot 100% identify. Misidentification kills.
2. Research EVERY herb for toxicity, drug interactions, and contraindications before making a tincture.
3. Label everything: herb name, date made, alcohol percentage, dosage notes.
4. Start with LOW doses — a few drops — and increase gradually.
5. Pregnant/nursing women should consult a herbalist before using any tincture.
6. Keep all tinctures away from children and pets.
7. If you experience any adverse reaction, stop immediately and seek medical advice.
