Planetary Kamea — Magic Squares

The seven classical planets each have a magic square (kamea) where every row, column, and diagonal sums to the same number. To create a sigil: convert your word or number to digits, locate each digit on the square, then connect the dots in order.

Sigil Creation Methods

Six complete methods for creating sigils, from chaos magic’s letter elimination to ancient Norse bind runes. Each includes step-by-step instructions and historical context.

01
Letter Elimination Method
Chaos magic (Austin Osman Spare, early 20th century)
  1. Write your intention as a clear, present-tense statement: e.g. 'I HAVE ABUNDANT ENERGY'
  2. Cross out all repeated letters so each letter appears only once: I H A V E B U D N T G Y
  3. Remove all vowels from the remaining unique letters: H V B D N T G Y
  4. Now you have your consonant set. Write these letters on a piece of paper, large enough to work with.
  5. Reduce the letters to their basic strokes and shapes. Rotate, mirror, overlap, and combine them until they no longer look like letters.
  6. Sketch multiple combinations until one feels right — trust your intuition over logic here.
  7. Finalize the design, making it feel complete, balanced, and unrecognizable as letters.
  8. Forget the original intention. Your conscious mind must release the meaning so the unconscious can work freely.
Rooted in chaos magic and the 'alphabet of desire' developed by Austin Osman Spare. The goal is to bypass the rational mind's skepticism by making the intention unreadable to the conscious self.
02
Planetary Kamea Method
Medieval grimoire tradition, Cornelius Agrippa, Key of Solomon
  1. Identify the planetary energy that aligns with your intent (Venus for love, Jupiter for prosperity, etc.)
  2. Choose a number, word, or name to encode. Most commonly, practitioners use a name or intention keyword.
  3. Convert each letter to a number using the system: A=1, B=2 ... Z=26 (or Pythagorean: A=1...I=9, J=1...)
  4. Locate each number on the appropriate planetary magic square (kamea).
  5. Mark each number's position with a small circle or dot.
  6. Connect the dots in numerical order with smooth flowing lines.
  7. Begin with a small circle at the first number, end with a short perpendicular line at the last.
  8. The resulting linear pattern is your kamea sigil — a path drawn through the planet's sacred square.
This method is drawn from the grimoire tradition, particularly the Key of Solomon and Cornelius Agrippa's 'Three Books of Occult Philosophy.' Each planet's magic square was believed to embody that planet's virtue.
03
Automatic Drawing
Spiritualist and surrealist traditions, spirit communication
  1. Enter a light meditative state. Sit quietly, relax the body, slow the breath.
  2. Hold a pen loosely over paper. Do not grip tightly — allow your hand to float.
  3. Set a clear, simple intention: state what you wish the sigil to represent.
  4. Allow your hand to move without directing it. Watch it as if it belongs to someone else.
  5. Do not judge or correct the emerging lines. If the pen stops, simply wait.
  6. Continue until the drawing feels complete — this may be seconds or several minutes.
  7. Review the result. Simplify and refine if needed, but keep the essential forms.
  8. The signature of your intent is already encoded in the lines — trust what emerged.
Used in spiritualist traditions for spirit communication and later adopted by the surrealists as 'écriture automatique.' In magical practice it is understood as direct transmission from the unconscious or from a guiding spirit.
04
Symbol Combination Method
Syncretic Western and folk magic traditions
  1. Identify 2–4 existing symbols related to your intention (runes, alchemical symbols, astrological glyphs, etc.)
  2. Sketch each symbol separately, then experiment with layering them over each other.
  3. Rotate, scale, and mirror symbols to find harmonious combinations.
  4. Look for overlapping lines that create new, unified forms.
  5. Trace the combined shape, keeping only lines that feel essential.
  6. Redraw cleanly, allowing the separate sources to merge into a single cohesive mark.
  7. Test the visual balance — the sigil should feel complete from all angles.
  8. Name the resulting sigil and record its component symbols and their meanings in your journal.
This eclectic method draws from multiple symbol systems simultaneously, creating a syncretic talisman that combines multiple magical currents. Common sources include the Elder Futhark, alchemical symbols, planetary glyphs, and classical elemental symbols.
05
Word Square Method
Ancient near-Eastern and Kabbalistic traditions
  1. Write your key intention word in capital letters across the top row of a grid.
  2. Write the same word downward in the first column, creating an L-shape.
  3. Fill remaining cells with related words, intent-resonant letters, or your full phrase.
  4. Read the grid in every direction: across, down, diagonally, backwards.
  5. Select the row, column, and diagonal that vibrate most strongly with your intention.
  6. Trace those selected lines through the grid, connecting them into a continuous path.
  7. Add beginning and ending markers (circles at start, crossbar at end).
  8. The path through the word square becomes your sigil — a map of language made into symbol.
Word squares have been used as magical charms since ancient Mesopotamia. The most famous is the Sator Square (ROTAS/OPERA/TENET/AREPO/SATOR), a palindromic magic square used as a protective amulet throughout the Roman Empire and into medieval Christianity.
06
Bind Rune Construction
Norse and Germanic runic traditions, Elder Futhark
  1. Identify the runic energies your intention requires. Consult the Elder Futhark meanings.
  2. Select 2–5 runes whose energies combine to express your full intent.
  3. Sketch each rune separately, considering its traditional form and proportions.
  4. Choose a central vertical stave as the spine of your bind rune.
  5. Layer each additional rune onto the central stave, merging shared lines where possible.
  6. Rotate runes as needed — traditional bind runes often mirror and invert component runes.
  7. Refine until the result reads as a single unified symbol, not a cluster of separate runes.
  8. Carve, draw, or paint the bind rune. Speak the name of each component rune as you make it.
Bind runes (Icelandic: 'bandrún') appear throughout Norse and Icelandic tradition, most famously in the Icelandic magical staves ('galdrastafir') such as the Vegvísir and Ægishjálmr. They combine runic powers into a single charge.
Charging Techniques

A sigil without charge is just a drawing. These ten methods transfer energy, intention, and life-force into your sigil so it can work in the world. Choose the method that matches your tradition and intention.

🔥
Fire Charging
Pass through flame
Why It Works

Fire is the element of will and transformation. Passing a sigil through flame embeds your intent with raw creative energy and the Sun's masculine force. The smoke carries your intention into spirit realms.

Best For

Banishment, courage, transformation, solar workings, spells needing rapid activation

Important Notes

Never charge a sigil you wish to keep long-term with fire unless you have copied it first. Burning the sigil releases it into the universe — it cannot be re-used after burning.

🌙
Moonlight Charging
Leave under moonlight
Why It Works

Moonlight carries the receptive, intuitive energy of the Moon, amplifying psychic and subconscious connections. Full moon charges with peak power; dark moon charges with deep mystery and banishment energy; crescent moon charges growth intentions.

Best For

Love, dreams, intuition, psychic work, feminine mysteries, cyclical workings, water magic

Important Notes

Moonlight charging is slow and gentle — leave overnight minimum. Rain will not harm paper sigils sealed with wax, but take precautions if outdoor.

☀️
Sunlight Charging
Leave in direct sunlight
Why It Works

Sunlight embeds active, masculine, conscious-will energy. It activates sigils quickly and powerfully. Dawn light carries beginnings; noon light carries peak power and clarity; dusk light carries completion and release.

Best For

Career, success, confidence, healing, vitality, visibility, anything requiring public energy

Important Notes

Avoid sunlight charging for shadow work, banishment, or lunar sigils — the energies conflict. Extended exposure may fade ink; photograph or trace important sigils first.

💨
Breath Charging
Exhale slowly onto sigil
Why It Works

Breath is the original animating force — in virtually every tradition, the breath of a creator brings life to matter. Your breath carries your life-force (prana, chi, pneuma) directly into the sigil.

Best For

Any intent, particularly personal transformation, communication, and workings tied to your own will

Important Notes

Ensure your mental state is clear and focused — agitated or anxious breath transfers that energy. Take three deep breaths first and arrive at a calm, intentional state before charging.

🩸
Blood Charging
A single drop of blood
Why It Works

Blood is the most powerful personal link — it contains your DNA, your life-force, and your full energetic signature. Blood-charged sigils become deeply personal talismans that resonate with your entire being.

Best For

The most important, long-term, or personal workings where maximum personal potency is required

Important Notes

Only ever use your own blood. A single small drop from the fingertip is sufficient. This method creates the strongest personal bond and should not be used lightly — the sigil becomes part of you energetically.

🌱
Earth Burial
Bury in earth for 28 days
Why It Works

Earth represents the manifest material realm and the subconscious. Burying a sigil plants your intention literally 'into the world' where it can take root and grow. The 28-day cycle mirrors the moon.

Best For

Long-term growth, planting seeds for future harvests, slow-building prosperity, healing

Important Notes

Mark the burial location if you wish to retrieve the sigil. Burying with seeds (then planting above it) amplifies growth intentions. Do not bury in pots you regularly disturb.

💧
Water Charging
Float on or submerge in water
Why It Works

Water holds memory and carries intent through fluid channels. Charged in a stream, the water bears your sigil's intention into the world. Moon water (water charged under moonlight) intensifies this method.

Best For

Emotional work, healing, relationships, purification, dream magic, anything involving flow or change

Important Notes

Use waterproof materials or laminate paper sigils. River water charges with movement; still water charges with depth and reflection; ocean water charges with vast power and release.

Pleasure / Peak State
Charge during peak emotional state
Why It Works

Austin Osman Spare's original chaos magic method. Sigils charged at the moment of peak pleasure, excitement, or ecstasy receive maximum gnosis — the mind clears completely and the intent bypasses rational censorship entirely.

Best For

Any intent, especially in chaos magic tradition where bypassing rational skepticism is the goal

Important Notes

The intent must be completely forgotten before the peak state — the whole point is that the conscious mind cannot interfere. This method requires genuine release of attachment to outcome.

🧘
Meditation Charging
Extended focused visualization
Why It Works

In deep meditation, the boundary between conscious will and subconscious becomes permeable. Holding the sigil in focused attention while in theta brainwave state charges it with pure directed consciousness.

Best For

Spiritual development, complex multi-part intentions, working with spirit guides or higher self

Important Notes

This requires genuine meditative depth — light distraction does not charge effectively. Practice entering a theta state (hypnagogic border-of-sleep state) before attempting.

🎵
Sound / Singing
Chant, tone, or sing over sigil
Why It Works

Sound is vibration, and vibration is how reality is structured at the quantum level. Toning the vowel sounds (AAA, EEE, OOO, UUU), humming, drumming, or chanting your intent directly into the sigil charges it with harmonic resonance.

Best For

Any intent, particularly healing (sound therapy), communication, and group ritual work

Important Notes

The most powerful sounds are your own voice — recordings are less effective. Experiment with the resonant frequency that 'fits' your sigil's purpose. Some practitioners use singing bowls or tuning forks placed directly on the sigil.

Activation, Disposal & Signs of Working

Creating and charging a sigil is only part of the work. How you activate and eventually release it completes the magical circuit.

How to Activate

Activation is the final step that fires the sigil into the universe.

1
Enter altered state
Light a candle, incense, or enter light meditation. Drop the rational mind.
2
Hold the sigil
Place it before you or in your dominant hand. Feel its presence without analyzing it.
3
Peak and release
Build emotion, excitement, or breath. At the peak — laugh, cry, exhale sharply — then drop the sigil and walk away.
4
Forget completely
The most important step. Do not think about the sigil or its outcome. Trust the work is done.
When & How to Dispose

Sigils should be released once their work is complete, or after a set period.

Burning

The most common and complete disposal. Burns cleanly, returns intent to the universe through fire and smoke. Best for most sigils.

Burying

Bury away from your home or in moving water. Good for long-term workings you want to naturally conclude.

Tearing

Tear into small pieces and scatter to the wind, or flush. Simple and symbolic.

Keeping

For permanent talismans (protective sigils on objects), keep indefinitely. Re-charge periodically.

Signs Your Sigil Is Working

Manifestation rarely looks like you expect. Watch for these patterns.

✦ Synchronicities

Meaningful coincidences related to your intention begin appearing. A chance meeting, an unexpected email, a relevant book falls off a shelf.

✦ Dreams

Your sigil or symbols related to your intention appear in dreams. The unconscious is processing the work.

✦ Resistance

Things may become harder before easier — the universe is rearranging. Trust the process.

✦ Unexpected paths

The outcome arrives, but through a route you never anticipated. Release attachment to the 'how'.

✦ Gut knowing

A quiet certainty that the work is done, often arriving 1–3 days after activation.
