The Fool's Journey
The Major Arcana as one story, from the Fool's first step to the World's completion.
Twenty-two cards, one traveller
Read the Major Arcana in order and you will find a story: the Fool sets out with everything and nothing, meets teachers (the Magician, the High Priestess), builders (the Empress, the Emperor), and tests (the Tower, the Moon), until the World closes the circle. Each card is a chapter you will live through more than once.
Three groups to remember
The first seven, Magician through Chariot, are about learning to act in the world. The middle seven, Strength through Temperance, are about the inner work that follows. The last seven, Devil through World, are about surrender, crisis and renewal. When a Major Arcana card appears in a reading, ask which chapter of the journey it belongs to.
Do not fear the frightening ones
Death almost never means death. The Tower is the lightning that only strikes what was built badly. The Devil is a chain you can lift off your own neck; look at the picture, the loops are loose. The cards that scare beginners are the ones that, read gently, bring the most relief.
- Lay the twenty-two Major Arcana in a line in order. Walk along it slowly and say one word for each card.
- Choose the card that matches where you are in your life right now. Write down why, without checking any book.
