✦ Sigil Magic

Sigils are magical symbols you create to manifest your intention. The act of creating them IS the magic — encoding your desire into a visual form that bypasses the conscious mind and speaks directly to the subconscious.

The word "sigil" comes from the Latin sigillum — a seal or mark. Sigil magic is one of the oldest and most universal magical practices: cave paintings at Lascaux (17,000 BCE) may be early sigil workings; ancient Sumerian cylinder seals were sigils of power; the medieval grimoires (Key of Solomon, Lesser Key of Solomon) are filled with sigils of spirits and intelligences. Modern chaos magic, pioneered by Austin Osman Spare in the early 20th century, stripped sigil magic to its essential mechanism: encode intention into symbol, charge with concentrated energy, release into the subconscious, forget. What you have here is the full toolkit.

Sigil Generator — Letter Elimination Method

Enter your intention as a clear, present-tense statement. The generator removes vowels and repeated consonants, leaving only the unique consonants that form your sigil's skeleton.

Sigil Creation Methods

Every method below produces valid sigils. The most powerful is the one that resonates with you — because your belief and intention are the true magical variable.

Letter Elimination (Austin Osman Spare)

The dominant modern method, codified by British occultist Austin Osman Spare (1886-1956). Write your intention in capital letters. Strike out all vowels. Strike out all repeated consonants. Combine the remaining unique consonants into a single flowing, abstract glyph. The abstraction is intentional — the goal is a symbol the conscious mind cannot easily decode back into the original intention.

Magic Square / Kamea Method

Convert each letter of your condensed intention to its numerical value (A=1, B=2... Z=26, or using Pythagorean: A=1...I=9, J=1...R=9, S=1...Z=8). Then trace these numbers in sequence on the appropriate planetary magic square. The resulting connected line path is your sigil. Used in grimoire tradition for creating planetary spirit seals.

Automatic Drawing

Enter a light trance state through breathing, drumming, or movement. Hold your single-word intention in mind (LOVE, HEAL, PROTECT). Allow your hand to move freely across the page without conscious direction. The subconscious mind draws the symbol. Often produces the most powerful results because no conscious interference occurs.

Chaos Star Method

Draw an eight-pointed star (chaos star) on paper. Place the unique consonants of your intention at positions around the star's eight points. Connect the letters in sequence with curved, organic lines. The resulting woven pattern is your sigil. The chaos star's eight directions symbolize infinite possibility.

Bind Rune Method

Select 2-4 Elder Futhark runes that encode your intention. Overlay them onto each other in a single composite symbol, rotating and mirroring as needed to create visual unity. The resulting bind rune is your sigil. This method roots your working in 2,000+ years of runic magical tradition.

Planetary Seal Method

Each of the seven classical planets has a traditional seal drawn directly from its magic square (kamea). These historical seals — Solomon's seals for the spirits of each planet — can be modified by incorporating your specific intention letters to personalize them while keeping the planetary energy structure.

Magic Square Method

Choose a planetary kamea below based on your intention, then trace the numbers corresponding to your intention's letters to create a grimoire-style sigil directly on the grid.

Magic Square Sigil Generator

Enter condensed intention letters + choose planet. Click Generate to trace the path on the grid below.

Step 1: Condense Your Intention

Write your intention (e.g. ABUNDANT WEALTH). Remove vowels: BNDNT WLTH. Remove duplicates: BNDTWLH. These are your sigil letters.

Step 2: Convert to Numbers

Using A=1, B=2, C=3... Z=26: B=2, N=14, D=4, T=20, W=23, L=12, H=8. These are the numbers you'll trace on the magic square.

Step 3: Choose Your Planet

Jupiter for wealth and expansion. Saturn for protection and binding. Mars for courage and removing obstacles. Venus for love and harmony. Mercury for communication. Sun for success. Moon for intuition.

Step 4: Trace the Path

Find each number on the chosen planetary magic square in sequence. Connect them with a flowing line. Mark the start with a circle and the end with a bar. The resulting path is your sigil.

Step 5: Stylize

Once you have the basic geometric path, you can smooth it into curves, add decorative elements, and transform it into a more aesthetic symbol while retaining the underlying structure.

Historical Context

This method appears in the grimoire tradition of the medieval and Renaissance periods. The Seal of Saturn, the Seal of Jupiter, and the Seals of the 72 Spirits in the Ars Goetia were all created through variations of this kamea tracing method.

The Seven Planetary Kamea

The seven classical magic squares — one for each traditional planet — form the mathematical backbone of Western ceremonial magic. Each square encodes the planet's energy in numerical perfection: every row, column, and diagonal sums to the same number.

Bind Rune Creator

A bind rune (from Old Norse bandrún) is created by overlaying two or more Elder Futhark runes into a single composite symbol. Used by Norse peoples for at least 2,000 years, bind runes concentrate the combined power of multiple runes into one potent glyph. Select 2-4 runes below and the system will generate a layered bind rune on the canvas.

Activation Ritual

The sigil creation process produces a symbol. The activation process transforms that symbol into a working magical construct. Follow these seven steps for maximum effectiveness.

1

Preparation

Cleanse your space with smoke (sage, palo santo, or cedar) or sound (bell, bowl). Set your intention clearly in your mind — not a vague wish but a precise, present-tense statement as if already real. Gather: your sigil, a candle in the appropriate color for your intention, and optionally: corresponding herbs, crystals, or oils.

2

Enter Sacred Space

Cast a simple circle if you practice formal magic, or simply close your eyes, take three deep breaths, and state aloud: 'I enter sacred space. This time and this action are set apart from the ordinary.' The shift in consciousness is more important than any elaborate ritual setup.

3

Charge the Sigil

The moment of charging is the most critical step. The goal is to push the sigil from your conscious mind into your subconscious — bypassing the critical, doubting, analytical mind that might undermine the working. Methods: Fire (burn it; the most immediate release), Sexual climax (the most powerful biological charging method — focus entirely on the sigil at the moment of release), Deep meditation (stare until you can see it with eyes closed), Physical exhaustion (intense exercise then contemplate as your willpower dissolves), or Laughter (the most underrated method — laugh until you cry while holding the sigil; the absurdity breaks through mental resistance).

4

The Lunar Window

For manifestation workings, charge between the new moon and the full moon — ideally on the waxing gibbous when the energy peaks. For banishing or releasing, work on the waning moon. For beginnings, the new moon. For completion and results, the full moon. If urgency demands, Tuesday (Mars) for action, Friday (Venus) for love, Thursday (Jupiter) for abundance, Sunday (Sun) for success.

5

The Forgetting

After charging, the sigil must be forgotten. This is the step most beginners fail. The moment you created the sigil, you separated the intention from its specific symbol. Now that it's charged, you must not keep checking on it mentally, not keep wondering if it 'worked,' not hold it in conscious thought. Hide the physical sigil, burn it, bury it, or release it somehow. The subconscious mind works best without the conscious mind constantly peering over its shoulder.

6

Closing

Thank the forces you invoked — whether that's the planetary energy of the day, your higher self, or simply the universe. Release the circle if you cast one. Ground yourself: eat something, drink water, walk barefoot, or simply press your palms flat on the floor. The transition back into ordinary consciousness is its own ritual.

7

The Journal Entry

Record the working: the intention, the date and time, the moon phase, the charging method used, and any synchronicities or sensations during the working. Reviewing your sigil journal after the working's results manifest (or don't) is how you develop your personal magical intelligence over time.
